Tree Pruning & Crown Work
The right cut in the right place
Good pruning is invisible. A well-reduced tree still looks natural — just smaller, lighter and better balanced. Poor pruning, on the other hand, leaves ugly stubs, triggers weak regrowth and can shorten a tree’s life by years.
Every job is carried out in line with BS 3998, the British Standard for tree work. Whether you need more light in the garden, branches cleared from the roof, or a mature oak made safer over a driveway, we’ll recommend the lightest work that achieves what you need.
What’s included
- Crown reduction — reducing height and spread
- Crown thinning — letting more light through
- Crown lifting — clearing roads, paths and lawns
- Deadwooding — removing dead and hazardous limbs
- Pollarding — regular cutting back of suitable species
- Formative pruning for young trees

FAQ
Tree Pruning & Crown Work FAQs

What’s the difference between crown reduction and crown thinning?
Crown reduction makes the whole tree smaller by shortening branches back to suitable growth points. Thinning keeps the size the same but removes a proportion of inner branches so more light and wind pass through.
When is the best time to prune trees?
Most trees can be pruned at any time of year, but late autumn to late winter is ideal for many species. Some, such as birch and walnut, are best pruned in summer. We always check for nesting birds between March and August.
What is pollarding?
Pollarding cuts a tree back to the same points every few years, creating a compact shape. It suits species like lime, plane and willow, and is often used on street trees and in smaller gardens.
Will pruning harm my tree?
Not when it’s done properly. We never remove more than is needed and avoid ‘topping’, which damages trees. Correct pruning actually improves a tree’s long-term health.
