TPO & Conservation Area Applications
Protected trees, without the paperwork headache
Surrey has thousands of trees covered by Tree Preservation Orders and dozens of conservation areas — from Farnham and Guildford town centres to villages across the Surrey Hills. Working on a protected tree without permission can lead to substantial fines, so it’s worth getting right.
We check whether your tree is protected, advise on what work is likely to be approved, and prepare a clear application with photographs and justification. Once consent is granted, we carry out the work exactly as specified.

How do I know if my tree has a TPO?
Your local council keeps a register of protected trees and conservation areas. We check this as standard for every job, so you don’t need to do anything.
How long does a TPO application take?
Councils usually aim to decide TPO applications within eight weeks. For trees in conservation areas, you must give six weeks’ notice before work can go ahead.
Can the council refuse permission?
Yes, if they feel the work would harm the tree or the area’s character. A well-justified application with a sensible specification has a much better chance of approval.
Is there a fee for a TPO application?
Councils in England don’t charge a fee for TPO or conservation area applications. We’ll explain our own charges for preparing the application with your quote.
